| Here is an idea for those of you who would like to see EWEB come up with a reasonable plan for their site. I have suggested that EWEBs site planning committee hold one hearing for the public every two months throughout their masterplanning process. Right now they are choosing which consultant to hire to "design" a community input process. Also, in December meetings EWEB is starting discussions with Diane Wiley-director for the infamous UO Riverfront Research Park. Hiring a public involvement consultant will be a waste of time and money. EWEB will hire one, though, and the consultant will come up with a report claiming popular support for all sorts of ideas and spending that the public actually opposes. The hearings I propose every two months with no consultants present are a cheap way to find out what the most important issues are and what the public really wants at or near the EWEB site. EWEB could avoid future controversy and build community confidence by holding these consultant-free hearings throughout their masterplanning process. Please help make sure the site planning committee and EWEB board members know the value of real public involvement by urging them to hold many regular hearings about this. Later on real data from the hearings about what the public wants can be used to keep the consultants biased report from leading to a bad plan. There is already talk by City of Eugene planning staff Nan Laurence that a parking garage could be part of the EWEB site "vision". A little time spent now could help us retain more of our natural greenway later. |
