The biggest problem with mixing architect and the builder is in quality control. The Architect traditionally is the one who chooses and specifies the materials, locations and relationships to demosntrate a clear intention of the design. The Builder is supposed to build it per the Architects intention. Often there is an issue in translation, comprehension, clarity and even specificity. Architects should not direct a builder HOW to build but WHAT to build. So an architect on a construction administration team is either someone who will help explain the intent of the drawings and make sure the building is being constructed according to plan or they're being used to push the builders agenda through. Hope this helps any...
