I would like to experiment VRML, by exporting from .3dmf
Do somebody knows which program is best to read VRML language?
I have downloaded Cosmoplayer, with no result because this program seems to work only on the web.

Luc,
Cosmoplayer browser plug-in should work reasonably well for viewing a .wrl file in your web browser. You'd probably just need to drag-and-drop the .wrl file on your browser's program icon, or use your browser's File menu, Open command to get it to load a local file.
But there seem to be a fair number of stand-alone viewing applications.
In part, it's somewhat hard to find info about VRML97 viewers because VRML97 has been superceded by the newer X3D specification. X3D appears to have some backwards compatibility with VRML97. So all is not lost!
The Web3D Consortium is a great place to find all kinds of technical information about the both the new and old specifications:
http://www.web3d.org/
They maintain lists of authoring and viewing software available for both the X3D and VRML97. A good starting point for X3D-related tools (some with VRML97 support) can be found at:
http://www.web3d.org/applications/tools/
And their VRML Archives page includes a link to VRML97 viewers:

Thank you David for your advice,
I have downloaded a 3D viewer named Octagaplayer with wich I experimented for the last days.
I don't know if all 3D viewers are similar, but it takes some practice to handle an object conveniently.
I have drawn many objects using DesignWorkshop and converted into .3dmf (Lights and Textures), and then into .wrl (VRML)
For 3D objects, I find that Octaga and Lights and Textures are comparable and the colors are luminous.
In one drawing, I had an object made of intersecting lines only, and I found curious that it didn't appear on the black backdrop of Octaga while it appeared with illuminated colors on a black backdrop created in Lights and Textures!

I practiced a lot with Octaga since my last post and now I have the trick. It is fantastic to have the feeling of walking and be close to or inside the 3D model.

Another alternative is WireFusion (http://www.demicron.com/wirefusion). You can load VRML/X3D into WireFusion and save as Applet (for the web) or Standalone Application.

Johan,
I have downloaded Wirefusion. It is a bit complicated but it seems very complete and professional for elaborated presentations. I was surprise that I can do shadows.
28 days left with the trial version.
Thank you!

I have been toying with VRML DesignWorkshop models recently for possible inclusion into my Tips & Techniques for DesignWorkshop web site. It seems to work, but every file I look at a render every horizontal surface is black unless I "fly" over and look down... not very useful for walkthroughs! Is this normal? Does anyone know how to fix this? I have tried Cortona, Octaga, and Cosmo with the same result.
Perhaps it is just my machine... Please do me a favor and check out this file and tell me if the ground is black or not (1 mb file of a house):
Phoenix House
Another problem is that anything with a texture on it becomes semi-transparent like glass with a faint ghost of the texture still visible. The Phoenix house has no textures in it for this reason.
Any advice/answers from anyone would be greatly appriciated.[/url] |

This is a known issue with VRML files exported from DesignWorkshop for Windows. Please contact Artifice Support by email for assistance at: support@artifice.com . |
