That's true - however, in the context of the new forum, the current registration system still provides for open access.
Folks are free to browse as guests. Registration is free, takes less than 2 minutes and a check box automatically logs you in making it all transparent. The benefits of registration from an administrative aspect and from a community building perspective outweigh a virtually insignificant inconvenience.
Visit the new forum, give it a whirl - the benefits are their with a minor learning curve and without the inconvenience alluded to your original note.
Cheers

I'm just so happy to be able to read a single thread without opening and closing a zillion windows.
I don't think it's unreasonable to ask people who want to post to sign in... |

| Quote: | For what it's worth, I visited the new forum, tried to get in there to post a note and ended up with the forum software fighting with me over the user name and password. Twice, I typed a user name and password, and twice it rejected it. I would never write software that does this with a user, and I don't have any patience with it either. Twice rejected, and I'm out of there.
I'm hoping the barriers to entry will come down. |
I have to wonder what happened since +30 other folks don't seem to have had a problem.

FYI, in the very first overnight for the new forums, some 40% of postings were spam, even with required membership.
Alfred, maybe you could correspond/communicate directly with Artifice Support regarding the difficulties you had getting a password accepted. Whatever the probelm, it should be fixed either with improved function or improved explanation.
We recognize that in many ways the underlying software here does not meet our own standards of utter simplicity. However, it is also programmable enough that over time we plan to deburr and burnish the various rough edges.
For that polishing process, your feedback is VALUABLE. In fact, we've created a forum to collect it:
http://www.designcommunity.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=8
We recognize that, given the inherent barrier of required membership, the demand for simplicity and smoothness in the rest of the system is increased. Remember what I said about forbearance of some growing pains?
Thanks!

Once you register the site can cookie you and then there is no log in when you return - easy as pie, and no - forum abuse - offers littering the boards.

Oops - such sloppy typing above. The edit function would let me clean that up.
I am surprised you had so much spam overnight. _________________ --

I find this forum quite easy to use and I had no problemas creating a user name and password (via Safari). |

| I had a problem late yesterday afternoon with my password, but this morning I had no problem at all. Maybe it was just a brief glitch in the program. I really like being able to view all of the responses to postings this way. |

Still to be seen whether auto log-in works.
Hard to open forum and see what activity is current and whether a thread I am interested in has new postings. I know you can have email notification but that becomes another intrusion.
I used to just like scanning the old forum for new postings on topics of interest. Maybe I'll figure this one out. It actually seems more "closed" but I like seeing the thread messages together _________________ Peter B |

Underneath the bottom-most message of each thread are two buttons.
You might investigate their use.

It took me three days, but I finally got in there.
My failure to receive a confirming email was because it was being caught by my junk mail filter. The confirming email is called

Is anyone able to get the automatic login feature to work. I can check the box but it never automatically logs in for me.
