Hi, I am a student at uni. department of interior architecture 4th year. I am completely stuck and desperate about my graduation project. Our instructor wants us to prepare a project that should be;
-modular
-flexible
-changable
-never done before
-unique
-aestethical
-abstract
-economical
-has a potential to be very popular
-very useful for the society, people
-creative unreal dream of an unexisting thing but logical and has a realistic base
-different from all existing things COMPLETELY but has a base related to them
-must be an interior space or a furniture for a specific purpose
-must be a new academical invention in the field of interior architecture in the terms of science
-must fill in the blank of a missing thing in the field
I have 3 ready and 1 unready projects now 1 is a structure that will be taken to space and used there as a starting point of creating an urban on the planet gliese. The other one is a water therapy center which includes massage rooms, spa..etc. One is a prefabric student cottage completely finished. And the last one which is not ready yet is a jakuzi-like bathroom element that is specificly created for handicapped people.
The problem is whatever I tried the instructor says my work is a crap and very ordinary. I'm fed up and desperate.
Any help, ideas will be great! Even I may accept a ready-made project and modify it:(.... |

It seems absurd to ask you to do something that has never been done before! Of course your work should have an imaginative twist but I always thought the objective for students, certainly in architecture, was to learn from past masters.
Though I guess it only goes to show Interior Design isn't really 'architecture'

Thanks for the answer. Actually they are leading us to learn from past but they ask as to find a missing point in those and create something never done before. It is quite a challenge. Unfortunately our istructors are more programmed for expressing the mistakes and all negative things in our projects rather than trying to help us, trying to teach us something...
Anyway I still haven come to a point to solve what they want. Any ideas or experiences ??? |

I agree that some lecturers can be negative and overly aggressive, but I expect one of their aims may the to toughen us up for the outside world. We will need the utmost self confidence to sell our ideas.
Maybe one of your 'ready' or 'unready' projects will be worth persuing. I like the idea of prefabrication, it is certainly very much the way of the future in construction, though I don't quite understand the need for a student 'cottage'. Universities tend to want mass housing (often prefabricated) which is good value and quick to build. Maybe you can suggest mass produced 'cottages', combining the best of 'cottage' with the positive qualities of 'mass housing'. |

| OK I'm not sure this is the route you are going but it was the first thing that came to mind. Playing off the idea of a simple architectural screen, creating a convertable partition system for the interior of a space. The screen can be modular and differ in transparency and sound absorbtion based on the function of the space. It would be economical because it would be a way to change spaces for different uses without having to go though demolition and rebuilding. It would be cool if you could make it some kind of electronic system where you can type in the configuration and the walls or partitions moved across tracks. Plus the wall materials and finishes could have unending possiblities. Thats just a start, in need of A LOT of thought to make it something possible but maybe it helps |

hi Veronica, what your instructor wants you to prepare is not difficult to do, because every project that you will do in your proffesional life will have a little bit of each component you described above. All of them will have to serve a practical pourpose, i.e. a restaurant project:
-modular: chairs, tables.
-flexible : the location and/or arrangement of tables, a single 36" square table seats 4 people, two tables in tandem seats six people, and so on.
-changable: the lighting, in the morning for lunch you want very bright and shinning. for the evening diner crowd, subdue and dark for dating.
-never done before: the colors in the carpet or the walls.
-unique: the theme or motiff of the restaurant.
-aestethical: the ovious, all the design have to be in good taste, and to please the majority of people, you will never please 100%.
-abstract: the paintings on the wall.
-economical: use real materials such as solid wood and marble in places were you can touch with your nose; other places were you see afar, ceilings, ceiling beams could be artificial;
-has a potential to be very popular: good food low prices.
-very useful for the society, people: food and drink with good atmosphere.
-creative unreal dream of an unexisting thing but logical and has a realistic base : the restaurant business alows you to dream as long as the budget asllows for it.
-different from all existing things COMPLETELY but has a base related to them : possible within the practical reality.
-must be an interior space or a furniture for a specific purpose
-must be a new academical invention in the field of interior architecture in the terms of science: what is accademical invention? Bush' lies!
-must fill in the blank of a missing thing in the field ???????????
Life is a practical thing enjoyed in beautiful building interiors, I use to be an interior architect doing restaurants, hotels, casinos, a good an fertile field, i am retitred now.
good luck |

Have you ever heard of Breeding Tables? (clemens wesshaar and reed kram)
If you were to talk to someone in the computer science table, you might be able to see how you can come up with a design that is ran through a genetic evolutionary script to come up with a design that no one has ever seen before. _________________ Jon Bailey
