We have bought Gene Hopsters book and are in the planning stages to build in the spring. I can't find where anyone has actually built one of these Hexadomes and now even the Hexadome America web site is down. Before we invest anymore, very hard earned money into this I need some information, tips and help on making this huge decision Hexadome or Geodome. _________________ Off the Grid |

The Australians seem to have some information for you...

GENE HOPSTER DIED earlier this year, yes there are quite a few, I bought my book in the 70's, but they are so unconventional that they never caught on.
I believe they are working in Australia, and a few in California, but I haven't visited any myself.
I recently got married to a younger lady w/children and somehow I don't seem to understand how to maintain Love/Discipline (16 yr old girl and 23 yr old son)in her enabling mind( never mind that I have 3 very successful son's).
I actually intended to build a small version of hexadome here in N Fl.
I'll see if I ever get the time or have any money left after coping w/ a 45yr old teenager and her children. |

Howdy from Idaho.
We bought a piece of land in the forest, and after reading Gene Hopster's book, decided to do just that.
A winter spent cutting lumber and bolting triangles together in a friend's barn, followed by putting up forms and pouring a basement in the spring.
We now live in the hexadome, and have seen a few in Salt Lake City, Utah.
It dosen't go up as fast as the book implies. Whew!
The shingles took me over a month to put on, whereas I could have roofed a conventional home in 2 or 3 days. Same for the sheetrock...very time-cosuming.
But once you've put down the foundation, went thru getting approval from the building department, and craned the triangles together, you are too far into it to change course.
Being a dome-dweller is quite a new experience, and we are enjoying it.
Any questions, feel free to ask. |

These seem akin to living within a monolithic dome. I rather like the idea of rooms approaching a circular shape.
However, I suffer some disdain from circular designs, as it seems it isn't possible to avoid acute angles once the room has been bisected in any manner. I haven't seen enough rooms of this design implemented to have stumbled upon one bisected. |

| you posted years ago, but i am just reading it. I built a hexadome back in 1985 and turned out great!...and great is not strong enough. I will leave it at that cause I am guessing no one is reading this. I can give more detail if anyone is interested. |
