Hello everyone,
I am a student and I have some research work to do. And what other better way to obtain help than from the pros themselves. I have some questions and I hope maybe I can get some assistance by checking them.
1. A building site is made up of mostly organic soils. What do you recommend doing prior to foundation work?
*My answer is removal of organic soil and store for future backfill
2. Name the most commonly used method for determining the make up of the soil below grade at a building site.
* I think is boring but I am not sure as there is also test pits.
3. What is the difference between a pile and a caisson?
*Piles are long slend lements generally used in clusters to increase load bering capasity on unstable soils, caoisons are usually site cast, allow for underwater work and are not cast in clusters
4. What is the purpose of the "bell" in a caisson?
*To allow for a higher stability/more anchoring surface and to allow for work inisde the caisson
5.You plan on excavating for a new building. The footing of the new building requires that the adjacent footing is carried deeper. The process of carrying an existing footing deeper is called?
* my answer is underpinning
6.What is the major difference between mortar used for concrete and mortar used for brick?
7. For a given project, the woner devides to build the building while the architect's drawings are still in progress. This is called a (blank) schedule.
*My answer is progression schedule
8. Name the two major types of wood treatment.
* My answer is pressure treatment and chemical treatment
9.The walls of an elevator shaft are said to be two-hour walls. What does this mean?
* My answer is 2 HR-Fire rated walls
10.Preliminary analysis has revelade that a building on a given site can be no more than ten stories high. This information came from:
a) Buidling code
b) Zoning Ordinance
*My answer is both, but I am not sure if building code applies to this as well.
11. A unit or configuration used to support the brick above a door or window opening is called a (blank)
* My answer is Lintel
12. A certain typew of joint is needed in brick masonry to allow the wall to shrink after construction. This is known as a (blank) joint.
*My answer is control joint
13. Architects refer to the form or shape of the land as (blank)
*My answer is topography
14. At a building site, the first 20 feet below grade is soft, non-compacted clay, with solid bedrock below the clay. What would be the best type of foundation system to use?
*My answer is Mat or raft foundation but I am not sure if piles or caissons are better in this case
Thank you for your time.[/i] _________________ "We will live life to the fullest, spit in the eye of those who hold us down. And proudly be hanged because of it"

DISCLAIMER: This is a quiz, howevere it is a take home quiz that involves research. As you can see I have most of the answers to the questions, all I ask is for the answers to be checked and maybe help me with the mortar question hehe. I know is easy to just ask for answers but this is a research assignment and one of the ways for finding answres is plain old asking.
Thank you. _________________ "We will live life to the fullest, spit in the eye of those who hold us down. And proudly be hanged because of it"

1. You need to have the soil investigation performed prior to modification of the site. You don't want to have to mobilize twice.
2. Borings are the samples taken from the site during the soils investigation. Test pits are done to determine soil perculation.
7. Fast Track schedule
9. Wall assemblies are UL rated.
14. Depends on the type of building you put on it. |

Thank you for your input Madimel. A couple of classmates and me were able to discuss some of the questions with a few of our professors and we completed the test. Pretty much all the answers I had were correct in the context in which they were asked. The only answer I changed was #14, we decided to go with caissons placed at 20 feet below grade on top of the bedrock as long as money is not an object. _________________ "We will live life to the fullest, spit in the eye of those who hold us down.
