"Autodesk has introduced SketchBook Mobile for iPhone and iPod touch. SketchBook Mobile is billed as a professional-grade paint and drawing application that offers a full set of sketching tools in a streamlined and intuitive user interface designed specifically for the iPhone and iPod touch..."

Well this seems like a missed opportunity for ES & Wildtools (to me at least). This was a much discussed topic here a a couple of months back. Alfred was pretty confident that there was no need nor desire for digital sketching on the go. Time will tell I guess. Unfortunate though that the power and elegance of PowerCadd & Wiltools will be there on my apps list... and odd that AutoDesk (read Evil Empire) actually has something that WoRkS on a Mac OS.

| I just went to the App Store and saw that they also have a free version called SketchBook MobileX -- not sure what the limitations are, but I'll take it for a spin... |

I was intrigued with this and downloaded the free version, and quickly bought the 'pro' version. This is one of the most elegant and innovative apps I've seen on the iPhone. It's very powerful and also easy to learn and easy to use, something that is extremely rare in software.
I still don't see the utility of CAD on the iPhone because of the difficulties of typing dimensions and the limitations you must have in an iPhone app. For that, take along a laptop and do your drawings on that with a full set of tools that have very few limitations.
But this is all about sketching on the back of a napkin. It will never come close to the type of sketching you can do with a mouse, but if you want to scribble out some ideas to show someone, it's a great tool.
On a scale of 1 to 5, I give this a 10.

I downloaded the free version. It is elegant and intuitive I agree. I just don't know how effective it is as the sketches are really rough with your finger. Used with a stylus it would not be bad but with my fat fingers it is not so accurate and is closer to a very used and crumpled napkin sketch! |

You might read the reviews that users have given this program. While there are the usual gripers, most users are raving about it.
It is a napkin-sketch program and that's all it is, but it's one elegant program.

The iPhone is becoming my constant companion. As a cell phone it gets little use, but it is everything else for me. But so far it has been a sketch tool disappointment for me. I'll have to give this one a looksee. I just got back from a 39 day camping trip mostly in national parks and forests throughout the western states and the only connections I had to the world were through Edge communication, some 3G and Wifi at libraries, some private campgrounds and McDonalds. Thus, my favored communications were through Facebook and Twitter (with apps). I love to sketch and draw. I'd like to see Google's SketchUp adapted to the iPhone. _________________ Davydd

On a related iPhone topic, I noticed that when I receive email on my iPhone, I can view PDF, JPG and Powerpoint (and presumably Keynote and some other format) files right on the iPhone. This got me to thinking about my .mac iDisk and Apple's iPhone/idisk app.
I uploaded a PDF set of one of my projects onto the iDisk, and, sure enough, using the iDisk app, I can view the PDF file on my iPhone.
Naturally, viewing a 24" x 36" set of plans on a 2" x 3" screen isn't optimal, but it is useful. You can scroll through the pages and zoom in on details, etc. I think this will be a valuable tool for me in the future, particularly when I am away from the office and get a phone call about a project for which I don't have the plans at hand.
I think I'll move a copy of my final PDF files for each active project to my iDisk, for handy iPhone reference.
regards,
patrick |
