We're making a sign at work and I volunteered to make a template. I created a new drawing and made the drawing size 18" tall x 17' wide, entered the needed text and then printed to pdf so I could print it on our kip 3000. When I convert to pdf and open the pdf, no letters show up. The font size is 1,400, making them about 10" tall which is what we need. Any ideas on how to do this so I can print on one sheet? The letters need to be about 10" tall. _________________ Ed Jaworski

Another option may be to convert the text to outlines in PCadd and then fill it with the copy color you want. Then they will be objects and not text. Not sure if that will matter or not as I would have guessed this would have worked.
Another option is to take it into Illustrator (I have had good luck with eps files) and print from that.
Last question is why you aren't just printing from PCadd if that is what the original artwork was done in?

Hi Gary,
I don't have a print driver for the KIP 3000, I'm not sure there is one. I would prefer outlines because we're just tracing in the shop and making letters out of 1/4" steel plate, but, I'm using 'Bank Gothic' font that the owner wants and outline is not available.

So I just put individual letters on 11 x 17 and since there is an issue printing directly to the Canon from the Mac, I just convert to pdf, throw it over to the pc side and print.
What a pain . . . _________________ Ed Jaworski

select the text, then under the Text menu, use "convert outlines" then you can group all and resize as you wish. |

Sorry Ed, I should have been more specific about the process but Matt cleared it up. Did that end up working for you?

Yes, unfortunately I already printed the letters individually on 11 x 17 sheets with the letters all black, it only used about 3 gallons of ink! There are 2 things remaining that I am curious about:
1: I can't print directly to the KIP printer from the Mac, I have to convert to pdf, drop the file in my in box on the server, using parallels on the Mac I go to the PC side, open up the file and print on the KIP. I guess there is no print driver for the Mac/KIP combo?
2: When I started this little project, I created a custom drawing size in PCADD, 24" tall x 17' wide, made my 'sign' with a font size of 1,400 which ends up being about 10" tall, since I can't print to the KIP directly I convert to pdf and when I open the file there is no text in Acrobat, not the end of the world, I just printed them individually and it worked fine, just created another one of life's mysteries, and there are a lot of those in my world! _________________ Ed Jaworski

Ed,
I did a quick search and saw where some said there were no Mac drivers for KIP so the workflow you describe is likely your only route now.
I believe the issue with the letters not showing up are due to the overall size. I just experimented a bit and I believe the max size you can print is 200"x200". I cannot recall if this is limited by the system or something else (quicktime seems to come to mind but not sure).
I tried to replicate your project and got the same results. But when I changed the width from 204" (17') to 200" wide, the save-as PDF function worked just fine. In the future if you want a single output you will have to keep your page size to <200" unless there are improvements in whatever is restricting this.

Ed,
You might want to check these comments from Jeffrey (on this thread http://powercadd.designcommunity.com/topic-16634.html). He is suggesting the KIP does have a driver for the Mac but it is hidden on the CD. It might be worth investigating this further.

When we got the 2000 we got a PostScript PPD from someone else in town who wrote his own based on a generic driver. Kip's official PPD (which you have to get out of one of the windows PostScript install folders on their software CD) isn't really all that much different |
