Wow, that seems almost too fast given they just announced them but maybe they are in the stores and available already. That machine looks like an absolute winner to me....essentially a consumer machine that really has the horsepower to be used in business practices...

| Someone here in SB ordered a 27" iMac a couple of hours after they were announced, and he received it the next morning at 9AM. Apparently Apple had them stockpiled down in the LA area for quick distribution. I was going to swing by the Apple Store on my way home for lunch to look at the new toys. |

HGI,
No, ordered the 20" with 4 GB ram ... had I waited a week I could have bought the 21.5", 3.0 ghz, 4MB for $100 less.. other than that not much of a difference that I can tell.. |

I was by our local Apple store today and took a look at the new mouse.
What's most appealing is the scrolling. I use a Logitech MX Revolution, which is the best mouse I've ever used, but to scroll you roll the wheel. Not a big deal, of course, but with the Magic Mouse you can just lightly drag your fingers over the thing and can go up/down or sideways by just dragging in a different direction. Plus, like the iPhone, the scrolling 'coasts', so you can flick it to start scrolling and then let it coast.

| I did stop by the Apple store to test out a magic mouse. Unfortunately, it had an antitheft cable attached to it that really interfered with moving it around. I did like the two finger swipe ability. It might be worth trying out. They had the 27" iMac and it looked nice. The only complaint that I have heard is from people with small desks -- it is too big and the can't see the whole screen at a glance! |

I bought a Magic Mouse to try it out and to see if there's anything I should be looking at for WildTools.
My Mac Pro does not have Bluetooth built in, so I bought an IOGEAR USB micro adapter since it's very small and would be suitable to use with a laptop. When I first plugged this into my machine, I had problems because it draws so much power. I had to put it on a USB hub, which I already had. When I tried putting it on the USB ports on my monitors or keyboards, I had problems with warnings of not enough power and also some strange problems with the keyboard not being recognized. But it is fine when I put it on the USB hub.
When I did get the Magic Mouse running, I tried it for a while and there are some things about it that are very nice and others that will take some getting used to. The tracking speed was slower than with my Logitech Revolution wireless mouse and I was not able to get them the same. I use USB Overdrive for my Logitech mouse. When I installed the latest USB Overdrive software, it wiped out the Magic Mouse settings. I'm going to wait until USB Overdrive has been updated to eliminate conflicts with the Magic Mouse. They are working on this now.
I did arrive at some preliminary conclusions.
Scrolling with the Magic Mouse with most software is wonderful and I like the momentum action. You can move up and down or sideways very easily and it just takes the touch of the fingertip.
Scroll wheel zooming in PowerCADD, using the two methods (PowerCADD's and while using a tool in WildTools) did not feel good at all. It felt a little out of control and with a tendency to overshoot. My Logitech mouse has two behaviors for the scroll wheel, one smooth and the other with click-detents, and I thought I would like the smooth action but I found I liked the deliberate action of the detents. That's the same problem with the Magic Mouse in that you zoom in or out too easily and it feels out of control. And even when you get used to the Magic Mouse, I don't think momentum with scroll wheel zooming is a good idea at all and it might make sense to ignore this within our programming. But it's too soon to say.
I'll venture the opinion that if you're using an Apple Mighty Mouse with the little scroll wheel ball, you're probably going to be very happy to move the the Apple Magic Mouse. But if you're using a mouse like the Logitech Revolution, you're going to want to stick with your current mouse.
In terms of the feel of the mouse in your hand, I much prefer the Logitech mouse.
I still think the Logitech Revolution is by far the best mouse I've ever used. It will be interesting to see how Logitech and others pick up on the concepts now being pioneered in the Magic Mouse, on the iPhone and on the trackpads of the Apple laptops.
If you're thinking of getting a new mouse to use with PowerCADD, I would recommend the Logitech mouse.

In our local Mac Users Group, some people have been raving about the new Magic Mouse. It got me to thinking about track pads and I was wondering if anyone used a Wacom Bamboo with their fingers as a track pad, replacing a mouse, and, if so, how it worked. Any input would be appreciated.
thanks,

I have been using the new Bamboo Pen and Touch for a few weeks and while it is not quite as sensitive as the track pad on the Macbook Pro it has worked well for me as a replacement for the mouse on my Mac Pro. I got sick of cleaning the little ball on the mouse.
It takes a while to get used to and I don't believe it is for everyone but I have been wanting to go mouse less for a long time so I am willing to put up with an adjustment period.
It is not a big investment and if you don't like the trackpad function you can always use it as a pen tablet.

I've been trying to figure out how to use the same mouse, button and scroll combinations to orbit, pan and zoom across various applications, and it's driving me nuts. Every application has its own way of working. Apple should get a handle on this, because it's like having a different keyboard layout for each application.
Apple's wireless mouse works well most of the time, but zooming in PowerCADD 7 is hard to control. Jumps way in, jumps way out with the slightest motion. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I found it impossible to use with PowerCADD.
