Hello all,
I just installed DesignWorkshop and got very interested in it. I don't have any previous experience on desingning tool whatsoever.
I'm about to design a simple model of a two-floor house but I'd need some basic guidelines to get start with.
The roof: What's the best way to draw a roof like in the 4.4.1 - Dormer exterior tutorial where the wall goes right up to the roof (opposed what's in the cottage-tutorial where the front face of the roof sort of forms a triangle). Do you make a big block and then trim off two slices of the top of the block and then put roof slabs on it? Or do you put two blocks next to each other, lower the outer faces and then put the slabs on?
The floors? What's the best way to make floors? Make a block for each floor or make a single big block and somehow create the floor levels inside?
I've studied already the tutorials but I'd appreciate if you could give me any additional hints about the details of basic designing.
Thaks in advance,
Tuomo

The process for creating a small cottage like the one you should start with for the dormer exercise is actually similar to what's described in steps 1 through 6 of the Constructing a Spatial Dormer tutorial.
1. Position and size the cottage by making a block that represents the walls of the cottage.
The original cottage is 25 feet long x 20 feet wide x 20 feet high.
2. Next, make two flat roof slabs with the appropriate overhangs for the roof.
Since they'll form two halves of a simple gable roof, the flat slabs should meet at the exact middle of the cottage block, below
3. Then tilt these up (selecting their inner face with the Faces Tool, then dragging or nudging the edge face upward).
In this tutorial we are using a 12/12 roof pitch.
4. Now, select the cottage wall block, and wallify it ("Edit --> Wallify..." menu command), setting the appropriate wall thickness.
5. While the walls are still selected, use the "Arrange --> Fit Object --> Upward" menu command to fit the walls up into the roof.
This operation will fit the side walls perfectly to the underside of the roof. The fit command only fits one object to one other object. So, the gable end wall objects will be fit to only one of the two roof objects. An extra bit of the gable end wall object will stick through the second roof object.
6. Use the Trim tool to slice the extra "ear" off the gable end walls, where they stick above the roof after the Fit Object --> Upward operation.
Now, you're ready to start Step 1 in the dormer tutorial!
I've attached a DesignWorkshop file with the cottage model that would result from these steps. This model also has a floor.
