Ok heres my dilema. I have cable broadband with an airport extreme distributing ip adresses to 3 macs sharing the connection via airport cards. I need to find a way to access 1 or all of the computers via the internet from a remote location. Can someone explain how I do this since I can only see the airports ip from a remote location. Is there a program or do i need to open specific ports or do I need 3 static ips (which sounds expensive). any help would be appreciated..

Sounds like you are trying to set up a VPN, correct? If so, some questions I have for you are:
Does the airport allow VPN Passthrough?
Can the airport act as a VPN server?
If the airport will allow passthrough but will not function as the server, it is my understanding that you'll need additional software on the server end.

Port mapping and assigning/ knowing the IP for the file server (or mac) in question needs to be sorted out. The Airport Admin help file has additional information as does Apple's Airport Support Knowledge base on the subject of Port Mapping and doing the type of thing you're describing.

You didn't define access. FTP?, Remote Control, ????
I'll talk about remote control via Timbuktu as other setups follow the same concepts but vary in the details.
I'm also going to assume that you're using NAT to map your external IP address to multiple internal addresses. That's the default way it works.
Some more assumptions. With cable internet you likely have an "almost" static IP. It will likely only change once in a blue moon. Power failure or the cable company redoing their network being the likely causes. Plus you likely are using DHCP for the internal computers to get an IP. All of this works better if you assign them an internal static IP. 10.0.0.11, 12, 13 or 192.168.0.11, 12, 13, or similar.
You should be able to set up the router to port forward all port 407 traffic to an internal IP. Say 10.0.0.12. Since 407 is the default TB2 port, this would allow you to TB2 into the 10.0.0.12 computer from the outside by using another computer and accessing the IP of the router with TB2. If you want you can stop here and hop into this computer then use this computer to access the others. Just don't get lost. 
Now to make it work with all 3 you need to assign more port forwarding and the ability to have TB2 listen to different ports. TB2 has this. Typically I use something like:
TB2 on machine 10.0.0.12 is set to listen on port 50012
the router then is set to forward outside port 50012 traffice to ip 10.0.0.12
and so on.
Works great. I just did software upgrads to 14 computers in an office last night by hopping from one to another this way. (and more tonight  )
Now the big trick is to keep track of the changing external IP. (It always changes just as you need it the most.) |

So you want to open the files over the internet as if from a server? That's entirely different. And do it from the outside to any of 3 inside computers? To be honest, if you have to ask the questions that started this thread you likely shouldn't be doing this. My Opinion.
File sharing over a typical broadband connection for anything but SMALL cad files is a bear to use. Things are SLOW. Most folks who do this pull the files to the computer they're using then push them back. If there are multiple people involved they work out an appropriate way of letting each other know which files are "out". This is usually done even WHEN you have real file sharing from a server. Broadband is fast but no where near as fast as the 100Mbit or faster link in the office.
I'd get TB2 for you just so you wouldn't spend hours learning new and arcane skills about IP protocols, router setups, etc... With TB2 you could get into any of the internal computers with minimal setup using most any router on the shelves of your local stores. My current home Netgear Wireless "b" cost me $10 at Fry's after a rebate. And it can easily be configured for the TB2 option.
To access the 3 computers via file sharing involes more details and back and forth discussion than can easily be done on this forum.
Just so you know, TB2 does a lot of things, but the 2 main ones are to allow one computer to take over the keyboard and screen of a 2nd and to allow two computer to trade files. It has user ids and passwords so you aren't open to the world.
There are other "free" products but I think you need a "canned" solution. |

A canned solution is good!
I have done this before I had the airport and multiple cpus and it was easy. The whole local ip behind the public ip and porting has got me stumped... I'll check out the Timbuktu....Thx again!!!
