Looking to upgrade/switch from using cadsoft build 7.2 to either latest or near new versions of envisioneer or revitt. Wondering if anyone has personal experience with these programmes for house design/plan generation and would recommend one over the other. Working for a builder of homes, units, occasional motel/commercial type property. Need to be able to create initial plans that may undergo several variations before final design is settled on.

Finding that cadsoft build 7.2 doesn't handle major changes well. It stacks moved walls vertically rather than continuing in the same plane and puts windows in the air or underground even when you continue to work on the one floor level. Also find that it occasionally freezes (and requires closing down and re-starting with some loss of data, generally) if you pass over an embedded washing machine brought from the standard blocks.

Appreciate your feedback.

Wow, that is some change. I have used both Revit and Envisioneer. I have to say that Envisioneer is really a great tool for somebody who is doing remodel work or someone who wants to do design development to sell a job to a client. It costs very little. But the fact is that it is not as powerful as Cadsoft Build at doing construction documents. I have worked for large production builders for over 10 years. I have to say that you are better off keeping Build to create construction documents and still be able to do costing etc... Revit is another animal. It is great for doing what you need but it may also be a bit of overkill.

Envisioneer is under $1,000. It has estimating tools. Its mostly parametric.

Revit is almost $6,000. It does not come with estimating tools, but it is 100% parametric.

Not quite apples and oranges. However, I have to say that if you are looking for a good program for production building, SoftPlan is your best bet. It is made for it. It has all the tools you need and then some for managing construction documents. It has tools to manage "options" for plans. It does take offs and wall framing panels for you, truss and stick framing etc... The rendering in the new release is very powerful. The program is very stable. I think this would be your best compromise at under $3,000.
