Fascinating article - especially, as the article notes, many are worried by the economic situation at home.

If firms go with their main strengths, then they can find that they may have a surprising amount to offer in other countries, and that the locals are happier to see them than they may expect.

Often the problem is the first project undertaken in a new country - does it have to be a full-scale architectural project ? With disciplines such as urban design even large schemes do not involve the same commitment of resources from the firm.

By preparing the right team and applying for the project to which the firm is best suited, life can go a bit more smoothly - and the first project can lead to a complete new range of opportunities for the practice.

Of course this is one of the major aspects of my work - letting firms know about opportunities across Britain and Europe for which they can apply. In addition, my new "winners" service is intended to enable firms to find architects and other consultants who are winning particular types of projects. Often it is the selection of the team which facilitates entering into a successful project - local knowledge matters, and it has to be the right knowledge.

Many architects would like to show what they can achieve in new markets - which is not surprising for a profession as international as architecture is today. Taking the time to find the right project and the right team is a sensible first step.
