I wish to know how are construction materials selected for any project , particularly in the cities of newyork and hong kong. Is there a common market catering to all materials like lightfittings, ceramics, furnishings, airconditioning, homefurnishings, electrical, services etc? Are these materials combined under one roof? or are there separate markets? Does the entire city manage on 'D-I-Y' stores like Home Depot? Do clients for big projects go for selection visits?..and if so..where do they go?
I am a student from india, and in my country, there is no do-it yourself category in any of the urban cities. Here contractors and labourers are available for the smallest of home improvement works. However furnishing markets are scattered. They are located in old congested areas, due to which it is difficult for a client to get involved in the tedious process of selection of materials. However for materials like steel, wood, glass..the market works on a series of dealers, distributors and contractors, independent of client's invovement.
My question still lies in How do furnishing markets exist in other countries? I wish to design a one stop place for all contsruction related materials.
Thankyou.
