What model Mac are you running it on?
Our experience with a HP 455CA with G-5 2Ghz models is that the processing on the computer side is much faster than the old RIP we had on a 8500. Almost as soon as the print is sent the HP starts plotting
The actual plotting speed by the HP 455CA is the same, as nothing really changed there. _________________ Andy Caldwell, AIA |

More info would help.
How does your setup compare to the info described in the Bullpen?
The HP 488 is on a network?
You're not still using the OS9 only HP RIP application are you? _________________ Andy Caldwell, AIA |

falconr --
please turn off caps lock. it won't make the answers come any sooner.
if you're running gimp print then you don't need the rip -- find out if you are or are not running the rip. gimp print is pretty zippy.
have you examined the print settings? what print quality are you using? |

I totally appreciate the assistance, I'm a solo here and this new plot time is killing me.
I've been reviewing the gimp printer settings & running tests. setting adjustments should have made a difference but has not.
current settings: Media: bond Resolution: 300x300 Image: Line art
Dither...:adaptive hybred tried fast & very fast- no change in speed
quality is still good but plot tine is close to 40 mins.
Anything look incorrectly set?
I believe that hp stated that the gimp printer would replace the original rip
software, I havent seen anything resembling it show up
Thanks,
Rich |

The key is probably going to be what computer you have and how large your powercad file is. I have a 867mhz G4 and it can take a few minutes for a plot to be processed - but never 40 minutes for a plot. Maybe 10 minutes for a really big file processed at 600dpi. I don't know about Andy's G5, but my plotter does not start to print until the file is completely ripped - you can watch the progress in the print center.
One thing I have noticed is that when I print multiple copies of a sheet each one gets ripped separately and none print until all are ripped. That can take forever. _________________ --

Rich:
So you've opened Printer Setup Utiility and Added a printer, followed the instructions on the Bullpen if needed, set the IP address, assigned the correct Gimp HP model printer description?
And in PowerCadd you've selected Page Setup for the plotter, not just "Any Printer"?
Not sure about the Gimp driver for the 488, but with our 455, we have to select the print quality at the plotter. In Best quality, a D-size drawing takes 6-8 minutes for us, 2-3 minutes for Normal quality.
Only other question would be: Do you have lots of memory in your PowerBook? OSX 10.3 likes lots.

On my G-5, If I leave the print setting at Color, the plotter starts plotting within a few seconds of the print being sent. (that is if nothing else is being plotted).
If I select Grayscale, the computer does have to process the whole print job first, before it gets sent to the plotter. _________________ Andy Caldwell, AIA |
