Is anyone running PowerCADD 6 on this model in OSX (Panther). Just want to know what you think of its performance, i.e. scrolling with scroll bars, drag scrolling with objects, zooming etc.

I'm buying a new Mac next week, and stilll want to be able to boot in OS9 for other uses. Please, don't tell me about Classic, it not good enough.

Thanks,

David M

Singles are usable. But getting near the bottom of that range. Don't know about the duals. Should be faster when you're doing a lot of different things at a time.

David,
We are using Dual 867 G4's and they work fine. Admittedly I have not ran PowerCadd on a Dual G5 to compare it with.

We have a dual G5 here at work, and as you would expect, it works great with PCADD 6.1. I have both a dual 867 & dual 1.25ghz G4 at home and PCADD also works really good on them. It doesn't hurt that each machine has 1.2gb of RAM. However, PCADD can be pokey on my 17"iMac at work. Especially with a drawing with alot of hatches, screen redrawing can take forever on the iMac.

I think any dual machine will run PCADD great..

PC6 performs no better on a dual than on a single, but perhaps the next version will utilize two processors. Unless you are running several programs at once (such as ripping itoons and drawing in PCadd), there is no gain to a dual. That said, I find PC6 on a Powerbook G4/1.25 to be perfectly usable. If I had a limited budget and wanted a desktop, I'd go for the faster single G5 over the slower dual G4.

We replaced eleven machines in December with the last single processor 1gig G4's. I personaly run it on an older dual 1gig G4 and ther doesn't seem to be a difference.

In any case, the program performance speedwise if perfectly fine.

Thanks for all the replies.

It appears any Mac that's 1 GHZ or faster is good for PoweCADD 6. I have found that lots of RAM improves OSX performance, even on slower G4's.

I'm going to keep the G4 350 and buy a G5 Dual.

David,

Your comments are consistent with our general findings, lots of ram and 1 gig.

Thanks.

I would think PowerCadd would fly on such a machine with that much RAM.

Don't get me wrong. It moves quite well but I was wondering if more ram would me noticably faster?

Some have reported improvements in adding Ram, but I saw no differance when I went from 512Mb to 2Gb in a dual 2Gb G5. My largest Pcadd file size is under 50Mb, and I don't run other programs while using Pcadd, which may explain this. Pcadd perfmance still scales more directly to processor speed than processor type, number of processors, graphic card or amount of ram.
