hi marina..

Im a 5th year architecture student, and have chosen oceanarium as one of my thesis proposals. I honestly don't have any idea what and how to start planning such a building type.

I reckon this post was still last year. I hope you'll have the time to pitch some information regarding the topic.

Thanks so much.

Hello!
I too am contemplating an aquarium for my design thesis.(as a part of a larger, already established marine research facility in India)
Although it doesn't seem too difficult to me to get the required drawings and maybe even standards for the actual aquaria....I wonder...is it a good idea to take up such a project for one's thesis?
I think the extremely stringent enclosure design standards etc might take away a lot of the 'freedom'of design.Would it be better to design something else which allows me more room for experiementation?

I am considering a mueseum of sorts(but i don't know of what!) because it is the ideal kind of building type if you want to play with language.

Also could anybody suggest new ín demand 'building types to me?...like 'green mall' etc.

Any comments/info on aquarium design/suggestions for design thesis would be highly appreciated!

hey...

I do reckon it's a good idea for a thesis..but based on what I heard, it's the statement/idea you're trying to pursue is what matters most, rather than the the building type.

Most say you have to find out where your interests lie, find out what you really are interested with, and work on it, see how you can turn it into an architecture you can see yourself practice in the near future.

Anyway, you're saying you have drawings/technical informations regarding the building type? I was hoping I could acquire some information on that.

If you could, and I'd be highly grateful, send me some of them.
Thanks a lot!

thanks for the advice!
What I meant was that I know some people at the Indian National Institute of Oceanography.....and that aquarium standards shouldn't be too hard to get...I don't really have them already:(...
But If I do get my hands on something I'll help you out surely!

You need to answer that question yourself.

Why do you want to design an Oceanarium? Are you interested in the theme of water and architecture? Is your site next to the sea? etc.
