Question:
I have an old G4 Powerbook currently running 10.3, I think. I want to downgrade this box back to OS 9 so that I can run some older, highly customized programs I still use and an older printer. Latest OS 10 is installed on another PB so there is no loss. I have the original OS 9 restore CD but since I have never done this downgrade I don't exactly know how to proceed. Any help would be welcome.

You can still run OS 9 under OS X. It is known as "Classic Mode". You do have to install OS 9 on the hard drive to make it work.

On the other hand if you want to totally get rid of OS X and you have EVERYTHING you want off the hard drive, then you can perform a clean install from the OS 9 CD. Simply insert the OS 9 CD and install. It will probably involve restarting with the "C" key held down to boot to the CD instead of the hard drive. After you start the install it does give you some instructions.

Which PowerBook in particular? As I remember, my Titanium G4/1Ghz PB was the last one that could boot into OS9, and, I think all the Aluminum ones only boot into OS10. For the machines that can boot into OS9, you can have both 9 & 10 installed and choose to boot into either one. So, bottom line, you may not have to remove OS 10, just install OS 9 (if it isn't already) and choose to boot into OS9 whenever you want.

Kent, Rob,
The powerbook came with OS 9 installed, it was later upgraded to 10.3, I believe. There are some misc. files and programs still on it which have since been either copied or have upgraded versions on a newer PB. There is nothing that needs saving on this box. By going back to its original condition (OS9) I can continue to use some 9 specific stuff which is no longer available. OS10 will never be used on this box so I want it completely gone. Again, I have the original restore cd, but how do I get rid of 10 and restore 9 onlyl. This may sound strange but trust me, I have my reasons for doing this.

Just use Disk Utility to wipe the drive clean and start all over again. You could probably do that from the CD, but since you have another machine available, it would go a lot faster to hook up the old PD with firewire to the newer one, and starting the older one up in Target Disk Mode. Check out the Mac Help files under "Transferring files between two computers using FireWire"

Rob,
Thanks again..I've done the firewire transfer and its really fast. I will probally just use the restore CD to wipe the PB clean and just restore OS9. I'll let you know how it goes.

Yeah, I just have some memories of booting off the CD being excruciatingly slow.
