they are called 'technical specialists' at my firm... although they are absolutely necessary and their work is greatly appreciated... as we move over to an entirely bim process over the next year they are going to become even more important since they will need to have a greater understanding of what they are putting together...
generally we are pretty picky about what kind of people we get so it all works out nice- cad monkey is only thrown around in jest at the office... or if one gets really indignant |

Oddly in every firm I've worked (small, medium, and big) we had no title, except for the PM's and Directors (large, obviously). The term "CAD Moneky" was always used derogatorily, even when referring to ourselves; ie; "I'm just a CAD monkey around here, they don't want my input..."

| I always thought it was the adjactive used before the moniker of "CAD Monkey" that determined the level of derisiveness. |

I always used the term t describe how the profession has abandoned its youth...we've been reduced to CAD monkeys...good or bad, doesnt matter. However, when one CAD monkey insults another, it doesn't matter what adjective they use. One thing is for sure...you don't refer to an Architect with respect as a CAD monkey.

He's a specialist.
A residential designer focuses on home design, but an architect may design anything from a house to a high-rise. |
Umm, ok....interesting, but so terribly, terribly wrong. It's more like:
"Architect" is to "Residential Designer" as "Physician" is to "Witch Doctor". One is licensed, the other is not.
Go ahead, beat me up for this comment - I can take it! |

| The company that I used to work for referred to all entry level staff as "Assistant Project Manager" in order to avoid paying overtime. |

Yeah..... we are our own worst enemies. I was always salaried.... meaning there is no such thing as OT. And then you were expected to work more than 40 hours or to be 90-95% billable. Now take out vacation and sick leave..... that means you have to be billable all the time. So people ended up just loading up projects whether they were working on them or not.
In my last firm (before starting my own gig 14 yrs ago) experience and the ability to market made my required billable rate drop to 70% - and even then I was still about 85-90% billable.
Titles can be a game...... but what it should do is outline one's responsibility which MUST equal one's authority.
I worked at one place were my responsiblity exceeded my authority. I left after I kept having to take hits for the "Project Manager" who had the authority, but no responsbility. I actually had to change a detail - which I knew was wrong - then I got called to task for it and when I showed the Prinicpal that I had done it correctly the first time, but was forced to change it by the PM..... they told me I was the one who was at fault....... F-Them...... I left within two weeks. |

titles seem to change with every project where i'm at... i might just be part of the architectural design staff on one project working under the project architect, while i'll be the project architect/staff/manager on another project... and i'm not even licensed- but the principal in charge ultimately stamps the drawings anyways due to the corporate legal structure...
although there are a few projects where there is a PIC that is also the project architect but there is still a project manager who is in charge of the day to day workflows and such... surprisingly the PM gets the final say on alot of subjects even though he's arguing with the guy who is ultimately the PIC and has the ultimate authority over the project...
in the end i think i'm just happy that i'm in a place where people very rarely try to pull rank or throw titles in other people's faces |

Madimel, you forgot one more kind of architect, THE FAMOUS ARCHITECT", basically a SUPER SALESMAN, has the social contacts and/or pedigree to obtain lucrative contracts, has a great eye for hiring talented interns, trust more in people with talent, knowledge, and horse sence, than in the nerd that can memorized the exam to obtain his architect license, it may even pay his staff well.
I am retired now, I never got my license, but I start as an intern, cooperated with famous architects in So Cal, and I had up to 20 licensed architects working under my direction, non of them had any other interest than a Friday pay check.
