I am currently working on a basic floor plan that needs a two car garage attached. I was wondering if anyone here could possibly give me some general minimum dimensions for one. I will then move from those dimensions to fit it in and whatnot.

Twenty feet square inside is about the minimum, I think.

Thanks. I got my project done, and it doesn't look to shabby either. The garage still needs work though, it was pretty roughly drawn up.

20 x 20 is not enough space - basically because you put more in your garage than your car.

You can get away with a width of 20 ft. This allows for a 16 ft door, which is the standard size for a two car garage. Then you want to add at least two feet to either side. This is tight and a foot or two on either side will give you more room to open car doors.

The depth is the real issue. For many years we have designed a minimum of 22 feet. Gives the wife a little bit of room before she plows into the living room Laughing.... okay that wasn't really nice.... but funny. Lately we have been providing 24 feet. Many developments (the ones run by HOA's - Home Owner's Associations) are outlawing sheds - so you need to provide some space for the mower, trash cans, rakes, bikes, and so on.

20' x20' net clear is the two car garage standard, but the local planning department may have a say in your dimensions
