Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could provide any insight into working in Hong Kong. I'm a British National, and am interested in going out there to work.
Cheers,
Duncan |

Lei Hou( Hello in Cantonese )
li hou( Hello in Mandarin )
I worked in HK for three years. When I was there, there is a colleague from England too. Haha...
Basically, HK design is more restricted in Licensing issue. That means if you are HKIA/RIBA, you generally should be very good. Most of the building site is very tight, so the design is limited in terms of the creativity. Some site have slope, that requires a lot of structure and code knowledge.
There are many projects there, either in HK or Main china. The projects could be rather larger than you experienced ever. So it would be a good idea to be familiar with large scale mass study.
HK design is more commercialized. If u master several typical strategies in dealting with mass, space configuration, elevation, you will stand out quicker. They use new western materials and construction methods too. So you might need to bring england's knowledge in this area to them. HK is a harbor city with tropical weather, so the building language used more often is mullion, glass curtain wall, bright color.( Hopelly someone add his comments here!!)
HK architects is very professional. If you go early, stay late, and more important, bring good design idea and construction knowledge, they will like you.
We generally have social activities quite often. Goto bar after work, have lunch together. It is fun, HK is one kind of city i would never forgot. |
