Is there a tool to measure the surface distance of an arc? Right now I select the arc and take the perimeter info from the edit window. Then I draw a line the same distance and convert to feets and inches.
Sometimes we roll steel in the shop and it's helpful to know the inside, center or perimeter of the surface we are rolling (bending).
I attempted to attach a snapshot of what I'm looking for and how I get there, we'll see how the upload works.

Ed,

I don't believe I understand your question. An arc doesn't have surface area, only length, so I assume you mean the length. The length of an arc and the perimeter information from the edit window for that arc are the same thing, since an arc doesn't have depth.

I also don't understand why you would draw a line the same distance and convert to feet and inches. If you want the information in the Edit Window to display in feet and inches, go to 'Drawing Setup', click on Units, then select 'Feet and Inches'. Now all the information will be displayed in feet and inches rather than fractional inches.

As I said, I don't think I understand what you're actually asking. If you would expand on your question, perhaps someone can provide a more intelligent answer.

No matter how I set the units in drawing setup, the edit window still shows the dimension in decimal inches.
The reason I'd like the perimeter dimension is so the guy in the shop will know how much straight material he will need in order to make the radius piece required.

Ed

Something must be wrong...

When I change Drawing Setup > Units to Decimal Inches. The perimeter value will then display in decimal inches as opposed to feet and inches.

Here's a screen shot of before and after from PCD8 with the two different Unit settings. My screen shots are from PCD8 but I've tested back to PCD 7.0.5, and 7.0.6 and 6.2.1 and it behaves exactly the same. Farther back, it used to use those same settings when inserting area and perimeter into the drawing (i.e. before the Edit WIndow had the ability to display that content).

Not sure why yours isn't doing the same thing as I see and pictured here but it's worth going through and double checking the settings again. In fact you should be able to select the arc, and with the option key pressed choose Tool menu > Area... and have it Place the Perimeter in the file directly. When set to Decimal units, it should place decimal values. When set to Feet & Inches it should place feet + inch values.

I noted in your signature you're running Leopard and PCD705. Given you're running OS X Leopard, you should also take advantage fo the free update to PCD 7.0.6 as EngSW notes it as being mandatory on their front page

It will toggle between decimal feet and decimal inches, but I was hoping (in one hand) that it would display feet and fractional inches since the shop works in feets and incheses.

Now on to the 7.6 thing. I attempted the upgrade and it appeared to install. I relaunched Pcadd and it's still at 7.5! So I click the update button again and the updater doesn't even launch now. Isn't that neat?

I ordered V8 last night for my Macintel 20", actually it's the kid's but I'll swing a deal with them. I'm looking forward to that, I think.

Huc, I think he wants to show fractional inches instead of decimal inches. What you're stating, that either way it shows fractional inches, apparently is the problem.

Ed, this may have been a change in Version 7. I'm still using Ver 6, but when I set the Units to 'Feet & Inches', Edit shows fractional inches, not decimal. This may have purposefully been changes. ES may have received requests to show decimal inches with the Feet-Inches choice. That seems counter intuitive to me, since engineers don't show inches, just decimal feet, but there may me some other users that would want feet and decimal inches.

Here are captures of what I see with the two conditions.

Correct - I was looking for a change for decimal, not fractional as was described in Ed's most recent post.

What you're posting did change from PCD6 to PCD7 & PCD8.

Yep, that is something mine doesn't do.
1/512"? I thought there were only 12 notches in a foot!
I guess the answer to my original question, Is there a tool that does this?, is a big NO.
Maybe when Alfred wakes up he can put the kybosh on this once and for all.
Unless, of course . . . . .
Alfred?

Did you try option clicking on the radius dim tool and checking to see if it is set to decimal. I believe you can set each tool to a different dimension unit.

I think I follow this, but I'm not too sure.

I have thought for some time of having the capability to dimension the length of an arc. I don't want to create a new tool if I can help it, and I think the best approach is to put this capability in the Face Dimension Tool.

Like I need something else to do...

Uh - I feel like I'm taking crazy pills or something, but tell me if I'm wrong on this.

According to his post, he just wants the Edit window to show the arc length in fractional units.

Just flip on Display Accuracy Specified in the PowerCADD Preferences to do this.

Draw an arc, then click on it and the edit window show that arc's perimeter, or length. Go to Drawing Setup, Set units to Achitectural, feet and inches. Then go to Preferences, click on the View tab, and select Display Accuracy Specified. Click on the arc again, and the perimeter shows the arc length in feet and inches. [/quote]

Your right -- but in PCD6 you did not need to check 'display accuracy specified' -- in pCD7 and pCD8 you do. That doesn't make sense to me. I also never recommend enabling display accuracy specified as it's like asking PCD to lie to me and round stuff off which I'm not a fan of.

thats how I feel about Flip Vertical Axis - which makes absolutely no sense logically or mathmatically. "up" should ALWAYS be +. Why it is upside down by default I can not grasp - but thats for a different thread.

Alfred,
He's not really asking for a new tool. He would like for the Edit window to display the Perimeter dimension with feet and fractional inches if he has 'Feet & Inches' selected in the Drawing Setup. PC Ver 7 and 8 displays as feet and decimal inches. Version 6 did it the other way. This is a change made in the program.

But apparently Jason and Huc found a way around it by selecting 'Display Accuracy Specified' in the Preferences window in Versions 7 and 8. Selecting 'Display Accuracy Specified' makes no difference as far as this is concerned with Version 6.

Alfred,

I've also wanted this arc length dimension tool or ability for a long time.
Taking the time to draw a dimension line & 2 extension lines for each arc where there is no arc length tool / ability -- not the best.
I guess I can use a leader to indicate the length, but a dimension line parallel to the arc tells the story better (my opinion).

Alfred -- how about it? Work your magic. Do like Captain Picard says and "make it so".
