I INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS FOR SUSTAINABLE HOUSING
“SOLUTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE HOUSING”
Madrid, 13-14 November 2008
Convention Centre
We have witnessed a considerable series of changes in our environment and society in the past few years. Such environmental problems are already directly noticeable, even in everyday life, for example: water shortages, pollution, global warming, climate change, increase of waste, shortage of resources, etc.
People are also starting to notice a series of negative consequences caused by our society, based on consumption and squandering resources, which are also the root of psychological and emotional problems in some cases. At the same time, these reasons increase the previously mentioned environmental problems. Similarly, people are now fully aware of our absolute dependence on non-renewable and contaminating energy sources.
Society based on current consumption levels has considerably increased the quality of life in many countries, but it is much more expensive than what the income levels of many people can handle. Consequently, some property such as housing, considered vital and also a constitutional right in many countries, is inaccessible for an ever increasing high number of people.
Housing is undoubtedly inaccessible due to the high fictitious price that it has been given in a society devoured by consumption, controlled by de facto financial monopolies, which also control social decisions and, of course, political matters.
Consequently, and with the aim of trying to solve all the aforementioned problems, perhaps the only possible solution is to change the financial structure of our society from within. The current financial and economic crisis may be considered a chance to make this necessary change.
We have to be able to provide new ideas, which make it possible to change commercial strategies to achieve a more rational society and avoid the destruction of the environment, even though they are controlled by the same traditional actors as before.
A secondary effect of these new economic and social strategies should be the construction of accessible housing that makes its occupants happy, not having any kind of environmental effect whatsoever.
In this sense the congress goes beyond discussions, raising awareness and reflecting, and actually tries to provide solid conclusions and solutions that can be applied directly.
As such, the best professionals throughout the world have been invited to take part, who have gone beyond a lengthy process of reflection and experimentation on their own initiative, achieving a valid set of conclusions, which can be successfully applied to their everyday professional life. They go beyond inefficient regulations and manipulative and opportunistic commercial proposals.
In short, the congress will offer a robust and contrastive theoretical framework, and a series of concrete solutions that can be applied directly to create far more accessible housing with the highest environmentally-friendly levels possible.
To sum up, the congress will discuss the following topics:
Economic solutions
Administrative solutions
Urban solutions
Ecological solutions
High energy efficiency solutions
Bio-climatic solutions
Functional solutions
Healthy solutions
Typological and formal solutions
Technological solutions
