Recently I've seen some schools go towards a pure 5 year master degree program. This means that its not the typical 5 year BArch. and then the 2 year MArch.
With the 5 year Masters its different (from what I understand). After your first year of school you apply to the architecture program and if accepted you go 4 more and graduate with your MArch (completely skips BArch). One of the latest schools I've seen do this is Kansas State University, along with North Dakota State University. I've been trying to do some research on it, wondering if there were any possible limitations with these degrees or if they are really true Master Degrees. I'm also wondering if there are any other schools pursuing this. |

If they're NAAB-accredited, there are no limitations.
Are they a true master degree? Of course, hence the name.
In reality, the 5-yr MArch is no different from the BArch. It's just a name.
For someone with a BArch, the traditional MArch isn't anything special vs a BArch for that matter. Frankly, getting a MArch after a BArch is a waste. You'd be better off with an MBA.
A few years ago, NAAB was threatening to phase out the BArch an donly accredit MArch's. Some schools made the change, other schools balked.
NAAB has backed off of the MArch's only idea and BArch's are still being accredited.
The 5-yr master's without an underlying bachelor's is not a new concept. There are PhD programs in psychology that skip both a BA & MA and you get a PhD in 6 or 7 years. |

Are they are a true master degree? I don't call true masters for just a degree. Even the system thinks there is something wrong with the system. That would explain why MSU of my state is awarding MAs to past BAs. hmmmmm food for thinking out loud. _________________ n/a |
