Northern Ireland is a wonderful place to live and has been for some time. I do have to mention that I study at the School of Architecture and Design in Belfast which is part of the University of Ulster and I’m contractually obliged to mention that Queen's University sucks.

I like teamjdc find it frustrating that so many people use this forum to not only ask for help but do nothing but that. I mean how many times does someone have to ask about a bloody aquarium or to be given a thesis topic!? If there is no specific information out there then do the research in the general area. Why would you need floor plans for a building when you can easily find out what happens within it, how a business of that sort works, the atmosphere needed etc and then make your own decisions form there?

I often like your direct, no nonsense approach, teamjdc, but you are going a bit far now. To compare Northern Ireland with Iraq is a bit of a joke, surely?! I'm quite sure Queen's College, Belfast, has excellent facilities, well regulated courses and far fewer bewildered students as a result. At least Ruaa has bothered to come back and respond (in a second or third language no doubt), which is far less than most students bother to do.

The intent wasn't a direct comparison, just an attempt to let the guy know that the world does not revolve around him -- his situation frankly, is irrelevant. He's lazy, plain and simple.

We all have crap we have to deal with. I am not trying to compare situations. The thing is that he brought it up after I called him out -- do not forget the context and progression.

The fact that this one is from Iraq happenstance. It could have been one of the handout seekers from India, Malaysia or New Jersey.

The issue has never been one of circumstance, but self-reliance.

If this is your final project for graduation, then you are obviously past the basic engineering and design of most structures.
Now the challange your instructor is putting before you is how you would apply the things you've learned, and begin to create things from your own imagination.
Perhaps the reason he selected a "Wellness Spa" was because there wouldn't be any specific examples for you to follow.

You need to communicate your client's needs now, and design something that will satisfy them, even if they can't describe it exactly.

What would you include in your definition of a wellness spa?
A sauna? An indoor/outdoor pool? Maybe a gym or workout room?
How much space would be required for an exercise class?
What about a changing room and shower facilities?

You need to decide what would go into this, because it is all coming from your imagination now.
Start designing, and show your instructor some preliminaries.
If he is really trying to prepare you for life in the real world, then be ready for him to change his mind, and then change it back again.

Good luck.

Ruaa, I hope you looked at the links I posted. Regardless, the best thing you can do as a student is look to yourself as the client -- interview yourself. What would you want in a resort spa? When do you want privacy and when do you want to be social? What kind of variety do you want?

Just imagine spending a lot of money for 2 to 5 days at this place. what do you expect to get for your money?

You lack vision, my friend.

Take any existing building, add a fresh coat of paint, a few massage tables, some aromatherapy candles, and voila!
You just created the Abu Ghraib Day Spa and Wellness Center!

This is not meant to be an insult, and the incidents at Abu Ghraib are not the issue here.
After all, Alcatraz and Sing Sing, two of the most infamous prisons in the US are now Tourist Attractions.
The USS Arizona, a ship which was sunk during the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor is a Museum.

The point of your assignment, apparently, is to be creative.
We can't do this for you.
You're about to go out into the world, and you need to rely on your own wits, talent and imagination.
If you don't have these, tell your teacher you aren't ready to graduate.
