Don't know where you are located, but in any event contact nearest chapter of the American Institute of Architects [AIA]. Might try starting in yellow pages under Architects.
Most chapters have a rotating list of architects which they can recommend for various projects. Many on the lists are even specifically residentially oriented and will serve you well.

Thanks you've given me a starting point.
I'm new to homeownership and had no idea where to go. I wasn't sure if I needed to speak with a construction company first or have an architect check it out.
