Good start, as we can now see the forrest through the trees after limbing up the trees and trimming the bushes!
Next step is to realy make a statement of the entryway, as its still too small in scale compared to the rest of the house. The use of the more modern like windows is a start but more emphasis needs to be placed on the massing of the focal point....don't be timid or it will look like small space with window dressing........open it up to the street and show the guests that they are welcome giving you the space to meet and greet.
Agreed the budget is good with your reclad solution...and of course the foyer is open to the outside given the new window area, but if you go the next step, you won't have to open this up again in the future....by looking for more space in cramped quarters.

Well now, this one is really pretty simple, isn't it? Donald is east coast opinionated and is a conservative. This means that the leftist mainstream forum master of the west coast will be all-too-ready to pounce given even the flimsiest of reasons. When conservatives speak out .. and especially when they become effective ... they must be silenced. How DARE anyone attempt an escape from the template plantation

Donald, my point is simply that you _are_ opinionated, and prone to express your strong opinions with a deficit of consideration for and about others. This can be a problem in the area of design advice, which should really try to rise above taste and particular outlook - or at least, if necessary, should focus on the client's taste and outlook, rather than the designer's.
And if you want to fight about it, take it outside.

The giving of free advice on a forum like this is dangerous at best...regardless of who's opinion it originates ....whether it from a student, interior decorator or a european blogger, left or right winged politics....the same tone rings true, its all "food for thought" and should never be construed as the "solution" to what one might consider building by. Hire an architect after digesting all the food you can handle, and by all means, be aware of the sources you are being fed from, should have been your suggestion to this person.
As far as I can tell (my two cents worth aside), there is plenty to go around in here to make one believe the food is too salty...and most likely is being cooked up by those not really in the know. Your targeting of those in the forum who makes their opinions known (maybe not quite fitting your template), borders on being prejudice and a violation of ones bill of rights.

Mr Barron -- Sorry that more advice has not been forthcoming. As you will see, however, the problems and their potential solutions are sufficiently complex that the help of an architect is definitely in order. As in the legal arena, so in the architctural: "The man who acts as his own architect, has a fool for a client."
I hope that what little help has been offered, has been of some use. Do let the forum know of your progress, if you wish.
