Rob, if you look carefully, you can find the Dell UltraSharp 2001FP (FP=flat panel; standard 4:3 aspect ratio) or the Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW (widescreen ratio) for around $460 (+/-). The 2005FPW has significantly better stats than the much older 2001FP. Finding good deals means paying attention to DealMac and TechBargain deals on an almost daily basis.
I currently own three Dell UltraSharp 1905FP's, one 2001FP, and one 2405FPW (that's their newest 24" widescreen model...that I got for $675 by playing the Dell specials/stacking deals game...that big boy retails for $1100, still a far better value than Apple's 23" model, even at Dell's full retail price). They are all excellent monitors...in some respects the 1905's are my favorite.
Rob, this is one area where I know my stuff. The Dell UltraSharp's are simply the biggest/bestest bangs for the buck, if you know how to shop.

Chris, thanks for the links. I wasn't aware of those two sites (I've used some other price shopping sites), and they look quite valuable for shopping Dell in particular.
IF specs are to be believed (and that's always a big if), the 2405FPW Dell is rated better than HP and some others that look like the same display. The 2001FP looks from it's specs to be the same as ones from Acer and Phillips.
My biggest problem with shopping for monitors is that I really want to see them in person. MacWorld Expo used to be vital to me for that, but the east coast expo has dried up to almost nothing in the past couple years.

Rob;
The specs for the 20" and 23" wide screen LCD's are all the same, if you compare resolution and dot pitch they're identical. My dealer says they're made by the same mfgr. For overall configuration the only odd ball in the line up is Apple, theirs only offers DVI and one year warranty. The only other variation is the contrast ratio, I think Apple's is the lowest. The higher the ratio is the brighter the screen will be. That's why I like the ViewSonic 23" (they don't a have 20" wide screen).
My dealer has been selling Acer for many years and says the company's quality is good. I don't like the style of the bezel though. I know it's just a display but I'll have to look at it everyday.

David
I couldn't quite bring myself to ordering an Acer myself. I just ordered a 20" Phillips after deciding I didn't really need 23". I'll have dual displays (PB internal 15" as well). We'll see how it turns out.

Rob;
What made you decide on the Phillips?

A mixture of price and brand name plus a little bit of design. Judging by specs, Acer, Philips and Dell looked like the same underlying display. The Acer is cheaper than the other two, but I personally am not as sure of the brand as Philips. I also liked the design of the Philips from what I can tell. It was also was more positive on Energy Star compliance. BTW, Philips also has an interesting 23" model, but it's more expensive that Apple's 23".

Rob;
Aesthetics are important to me too, must be the designer in us.
It doesn't have to match the Mac but I don't want it to look cheap either. I'm willing to pay more if I like the quality, features and especially for a 3 year warranty.
When you get the Phillips let us know what's it's like. After the problems with the iMac G5, which are still ongoing, I've decided to sell it and get a PowerMac G5. I'm still not sure about LCD size but think I will go with a 23". Apple's 30" sounds nice but it's really too expensive for the extra space.

Well, it came and I have two imediate reactions: 1) WOW, this is brighter that the Powerbook display, and 2)DANG! It appears that my TiPB G4/1ghz, despite the DVI port and ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 video card, has a problem with the native resolution of 1680x1050.
I withheld final judgement on the brightness untill I calibrated the display (I have a Colorvision Spyder Pro), but it's just as bright after that process. After calibrating both and comparing both gamuts in ColorSync Utility, the Philips a much wider relative gamut to the PB display.
Here's an attachment. Light grey is gamut of Philips 200w, color is gamut of TiPowerbook internal display.

That's neat. That's just a tad shorter than the resolution of the 15" Powerbook screen.
Further update on the 1680x1050: if I use a DVI adapter and plug the monitor in with the analog cable, my Powerbook supports this resolution just fine. Go figure.
