I study textile engineering and I'm currently trying to write a paper on the
use of metall structures in architecture.

I have some trouble finding material on the use of steel tissue as concrete
reinforcement. I just know that it has been done before and I was told that
it might have been in the 50ies.

Another point I'm not sure about is the use of metal sieves while building
construction.

Since I am really a greenhorn in architecture I would greatly appreaciate
any kind of help.

Thanks a lot in advance

Britta

hi britta!
I am greenhorn in construction, despite the fact I study architecture, but I've good idea for your introduction: write about flowerpots in Versal; that is the first example of using steel to reinforce concrete- Andre Lenotre(?) projected so huge flowerpots, that they cracked under the weight of mould and... he's put into some strings ( or rings) . It worked, under the same law as today's skycreepers. Should be enough for your paper, don't you think...

if not, I can tell you, that I'm just doing my reinforced-steel project and have just written a test of it, so... I've got some information, but it's only theoretical (very poor) knowledge; some facts like how many strings to put in a grider under given force, what is the cooperation between that materials in building structures, and stuff like that. Without any (historical) examples. But if you have such questions, go on, ask, I can eagerly help you.

Don't know of any metallic tissue sheets, but there is a "fabric"-- an open grid mesh made of welded wires which is used as reinforcement in concrete. Also some years ago, there was a perforated metal sheet reinforcment, used for bank vaults-- to both reinforce, and prevent intrusion by thevies.

Try to contact the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute [CRSI] at
www.crsi.org or the American Concrete Institute at www. aci-int.org

USE OF METAL STRUCTURE! Rolling Eyes

I think one examle which you would love to add in your paper will be the "effel tower". Metals are widely used in frames of skyscrapers. Metal is also used as an effect adding agent by coveting pillars etc. with metal sheets, to give it a hard look and a royal touch. Materials like RCC and ferocement etc. mainly rest on metal. As for today metal is backbone for construction.
