I do a lot of architectural as-builts for house remodelers/builders however the process to manually measure a house and create a 3-d drawing file is labor intensive.

There is proprietary software such as photomodeler that will allow creating a 3d model in photomodeler by digitizing points in a digital photograph however, when I try to import the resulting photomodeler file into a CAD program such as Softplan, I loose most of the attributes. Does anyone know of how I can create a CAD ready 3d asbuilt that I can use as a base drawing to start design and CDs with?

Is there a way to optically scan a small house into an application to get a 3-d model?

There is a software that was (is?) made by an Italian company called DigiCad 3D. The idea is to take a picture, define certain known dimensions which will allow computer processor to use trigonometric properties in order to flatten out the view for further 2D modeling. We found such method to be useful as a double-check measure, yet it is far from perfect. Asbuilt documentation is a service much like land surveying. Both have advantage of using latest technology, but in the end the more time a qualified agent spends on site the better final product will stand.
