hi...
i need your views for my thesis....
the topic that interested me is architecture for visually impaired....
this seemed interesting to me since the thought process has to be focussed on other sensory perception (other than visual)....
i dont no what to consider for design.... school will be too small a scale for this level.... can somebody please please guide me how to direct my analysis and design

i urgently need ur suggestions since i have to submit my synopsis by july..
thank you
anne

Sound must have been your obvious choice for how the visually impaired might translate and transform through space. Yet, I think you might need to define you outline better. What type of environment are you looking into, large social gatherings or more intimate spaces such as a residential location?

This is an extremely intriguing idea for how someone who is visually impaired understands space, I would love to hear how you would design and space that could be comfortable for such a person. What are some of you case studies? I know that spaces such as city streets or the chatting of large social spaces help visually impaired people calm down and feel more accepted than large open areas where they can not get there baring.

This could help out many designers who have virtually no idea on how to design for such a thing.

Great topic…

Cool Its really a cool idea for any thesis........

Main challenge in front of you is that its, easy to please visually than by any other sense, so you should carefully design to imulsify all other senses.Adding smelling as one aspect would be very interesting.
Going for a school may be small... Rolling Eyes... but I think a "Blind Care Center" will be enoung for a thesis.

hi...i began my thesis too on similar grounds....i was looking at 'sensory realm' in architecture and my obvious research was in diffrent senses like texture, smell, vision, etc. but, interestingly, my guide helped me grow with my subject.
he guided me into adding layers of research to it that would direct me into questioning areas that desire for these senses..
after going through a long process of abstracted words like..memory...history..death...monuments...rituals...etc...
i m at a stage where m now lookin at 'Raj Ghat' in delhi as a monument in public space. the senses it creates and the senses it should evoke.
the thesis is still under construction but i thought it might be nice to share my experience with u; incase u r also facing the same 'stuck' feeling that i went through in my intial stages.
although, if u still want to stay with building a space for visually impaired, i can mail u my initial studies if u want.
best of luck. and keep updating how uor thesis works out.

let me know.
also, read venturi's questions of perception. might be very helpful to u.

dhwani is right ..as we can see architecture...we can also hear, smell fell as well as taste architeture...Take sight for instance...There are cetain hurdles involved...You might be disillusioned by what you see...The same goes with sound and feel...So when you design for the visually impaired..there are a few things that you ought to take in to account...
You and feel space through sound..the quality of sound in a space defines the space...It helps us understand the space better..We can imagine the kind of sound we hear in an open street..closed room...corridors...double height atriums..etc...These should be your refference points in your design..By the location of openings in the walls you can bring in sound focal points...intrestings paths and patterns in the soundscapes...Which are pleasin' to the ear...Also variations of textures..from room to room..help identify...It acts as a language...And first of all we have to streamline this language..by identifing...possib;e space...
